Amazon.in and Flipkart mobile apps have touched the 100-million, or 10-crore, download mark on Google Play Store. Google updates the data occasionally and the number of downloads is categorised in ranges — it does not provide an absolute number. Less than a month ago, both the Indian e-commerce apps were in the 50-100 million category.
Media and entertainment app Hotstar was the first India-specific app to cross 10 crore downloads in the country. My-Jio app crossed this mark in August. The apps of Flipkart's other businesses — Myntra, Jabong and PhonePe — are all in the 10-50 million category.
India has around 400 million smartphone users, which means more than a quarter of them have downloaded Hotstar, MyJio, Flipkart and Amazon.
Ola and Snapdeal have been downloaded more than 50 million times, but less than 100 million. Other apps like Paytm and Hike, both of which claim more than 100 million users, still have not crossed that threshold on Google Play Store. They are still in the 50 million to 100 million category. Music-streaming apps Gaana (from BCCL, owners of The Times of India Group) and Saavn are also in the same category.
The top downloaded apps in India are WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger by Facebook, UC Browser of Alibaba, and TrueCaller. However, the India-specific download numbers are not known for these apps.
